Flower Meanings
Recently I have been exploring the world of old school flower symbolism and how Victorians had a trend of using flower boquets to send secret messages. Sounds like something out of a spy movie right? Well I wanted to share here some of the flower meanings I've come across. This is as much a database for me as one for all of you haha.
The background image is of some marshmellow flowers which means sweet disposition which I just think is nice (Its also a very nice song by The Temper Trap), I might change it to something more personal when I think of it but for now its good.
| Flower name | Image | Meaning | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marshmallow Plant (Althaea officinalis) | ![]() |
Sweet disposition | Currently the background I'm using we'll see how long it stays that way |
| Almond Tree (Prunus amygdalus) | ![]() |
Despair, Indiscretion, Thoughtlessness, A blunder | The meanings behind this is due to the Almond tree blossoming very early into spring where the frost tends to freeze their flowers. |
| Adonis (Adonis annua) | ![]() |
Sorriful rememberance | Adonis was in Roman mythology, killed while hunting a boar and the tears that Venus shed lead to these flowers blooming. |
| Amaranth (Amaranthus sp.) | flower pic | Immortality | These flowers never wilt instead dry out while keeping their colours. It is also associated with death where it is said that the soul may search for these before reaching eternity. (I feel like its more greek mythology stuff but I havent fact checked this.) |
| Andromeda (Peiris sp. or Andromeda polifolia) | flower pic | Will you help me? For whom do you wait? Bound by fate | I feel like this flower has such dramatic meanings. |
| Anemone (Anemone sp.) | flower pic | Forsaken, sickness, anticipation | Also known as the wind flower. It was thought that Anemones spread illness by tainting the air. This flower is also poisonous. |
| Angelica (Angelica sp.) | flower pic | Inspiration | Poets used to wear crowns of Angellica for inspiration |
| Aster (Aster sp.) | flower pic | Cheerfulness in old age, after thought | It blooms long after other flowers do and is one of the flowers you can do the "He loves me, he loves me not" thing with. |
| Belladonna (Atropa bella-donna) | flower pic | Silence | Belladonna also known as Deadly nightshade (or Didily nightshade if youre my sister) is obviously very poisonous so I cant imagine it having positive connotations in any context. |
| Begonia (Begonia sp.) | flower pic | Deformity, Beware of a fanciful nature | No notes yet |
| Bay leaf (Laurus nobilis) | flower pic | I change but in death | Linked to the greek tale of Daphne and her death |
| Chickweed (Stellaria media) | flower pic | Rendevous | Not sure how you would use this plant in a boquet but hey each to their own. |
| Bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) | flower pic | Constancy | example |
| Black Horehound (Ballota nigra) | flower pic | I reject you | Can you tell that I love the flower meanings that arent just love. |
| Browallia (Browallia sp.) | flower pic | Can you bear poverty | example |
| Bugloss (Echium vulgare) | flower pic | Hypocracy | example |
| Name | flower pic | awesome | example |
